Week 1 Meeting Notes
Thank you all for joining us yesterday afternoon/night/morning (for our folks that were out in Japan) in our first meeting and WOW we had such a great turnout for it!! We had Sun Devils joining us from every almost every branch (sorry Space Force, maybe one day...), component, Veterans of varying degrees, and of course our ever steady family members. We had some great chats about our most favorite place that the military has sent us, I think Hawaii or Japan may have taken the best spot but it's hard to tell.
Sun Devil Spotlight: We introduced this section, which will be us as your leadership team pushing out any information from ASU that will be relevant to you all. For this meeting we let you all know about the Office of Veteran and Military Academic Engagement (OVMAE)'s Online Welcome week event which will be September 2nd, 9-10 AM (MST), you can register for the event here. We also pushed out an awesome volunteer opportunity for our online community to thank the Vietnam Veterans who came before us by sending in a 15-20 second video to ovmae@asu.edu by 15 September. For more information, visit our Announcement page in the forum for more information!
We also talked about what we as a club can do to really make our club a community. So many great ideas were thrown out from you all so I will do my best to make sure I get everything reflected on our notes and in future meetings. We advertised our Discord Server which you all can join and we apparently have a lot of gamers (though no clear cut winner on which game was the best...) so we may do some breakout groups pertaining to gaming. We also talked about having guest speakers come to our group meeting to discuss different types of resources that we can utilize. We will be reaching out to some of them to see if we can arrange them speaking at some of our upcoming meetings.
Lastly, we brought up some exciting developments that we have coming up as we as a club get more established! In conjuction with the ASU Alumni Veterans Chapter and the Office of Veteran and Military Academic Engagement we will be establishing a mentorship program that will allow current students a chance to talk to senior leaders and alumni in a small group or 1 on 1 setting with them. Also, in case you didn't notice the picture at the top of this email changed...you are looking at the Sun Devil Warriors Club official logo (it should be reflected on Sun Devil Central in a few days)! Now that we have a logo, we will be working on getting us shirts because...who doesn't love free ASU swag!?
Our next meeting will be the week of September 8th-12th, and we have invited Wanda Wright, Director of the ASU Office of Veteran and Military Academic Engagement to come and speak to us. Be on the look out for the event on Sun Devil Central.
Lots of exciting developments for our club and we can't wait to see how everything comes together!
Go Devils!
