What is this event?

A live, interactive roundtable for students who want to break into research early, featuring panelists who’ve actually done it. Hear why they decided (or chose not) to start research in their early academic years, how thesis vs. non-thesis tracks shaped their paths, and how early research opportunities turned into publications, PhD admissions, and industry opportunities.

What attendees will hear?

- Why start research early (and when it actually makes sense).
- How to find openings in ASU labs: where to look, what to send, and how to follow up.
- Thesis vs. Non-Thesis: real differences in scope, pros/cons for research careers and industry roles.
- How early research or thesis can give you an edge with your job applications.
- How to approach professors for thesis advising: email scripts and conversation tips.
- Open Q&A with panelists

Insider hints about the panelists:

Hear from people who’ve actually done it: past students who pursued both thesis and non-thesis paths, master’s RAs, and early-career researchers now pursuing full-time research or working as industry professionals. Expect candid takes on when starting early truly makes sense, how to find and secure ASU lab roles (what to send and how to follow up), the real thesis vs. non-thesis differences and career trade-offs, and practical outreach tips for approaching potential advisors, plus open Q&A to dig into your specific questions.
