Details

Basant Mela is a South Asian harvest and spring festival rooted in the traditions of Basant and Baisakhi, which celebrate the arrival of spring and the harvest season across regions and countries including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. Historically, these festivals mark renewal, gratitude, and community gathering, and are closely associated with music, color, dance, and shared cultural expression. At ASU, Basant Mela has evolved into a large-scale, inclusive campus celebration that brings together international, graduate, and domestic students.

The event is hosted by ISSC in collaboration with 10+ South Asian and international student organizations, all of which have a significant graduate student population within their leadership and membership. Importantly, based on historical attendance data, approximately 80–85% of Basant Mela attendees have been graduate students, making this event especially aligned with GSG’s mission and the graduate student community it represents.

This year’s Basant Mela is scheduled for April 16, 2026, from 5:00–8:00 PM at SSV Lawn (Tempe Campus), with an anticipated attendance of 800–1000+ students. The event will include a live performance stage, cultural and modern performances, student organization tabling, carnival games, food vendors, interactive cultural activities, and large-scale lighting and décor to transform the venue into a festival environment.
