As the first historically American Indian sorority, Alpha Pi Omega was founded by four college women, known by the sorority as the Four Winds: Jamie Goins (Lumbee), Shannon Brayboy (Lumbee), Christina Strickland (Lumbee), and Amy Locklear (Lumbee/Coharie).

Together, we focus on uplifting our traditional values, striving for academic success, becoming one with our spirituality, and standing up to make a difference in the contemporary issues facing our world today.

OUR MISSION

The mission of Alpha Pi Omega Sorority, Inc. is to create a strong sisterhood that will serve as a support for college and professional women in today's society. The sisterhood shall support its members in their individual journeys towards a balanced life. The Alpha Pi Omega woman will always strive for greater scholarship, honesty, leadership, service, and personal integrity. The Sorority will work to preserve our Indigenous traditions, for through celebration and practice of our cultural and spiritual heritage, we become one with each other.

ABOUT

Alpha Pi Omega Sorority Inc., is the country’s oldest Indigenous Greek letter organization. Founded at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill on Sept. 1, 1994, the sorority has more than 1,000 sisters representing more than 130 tribes nationwide and 25 chartered chapters.

The Iota Chapter was chartered at Arizona State University on June 7, 2008

REQUIREMENTS

Women interested in joining the Iota Chapter must meet the following requirements:

+ Must be currently enrolled as a full-time student at Arizona State University.

+ Hold a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA.

+ Have completed at least one semester as a full-time college student.

+ Must not have any affiliation with another social sorority.

Foundations Week

The Iota Chapter hosts events during the first week of September to celebrate the national founding of Alpha Pi Omega on September 1, 1994.

Orange T-Shirt Day

The Iota Chapter supports the National Indian Education Association (NIEA) as our national philanthropy. In alignment with this commitment to Indigenous education and history, we also observe Orange Shirt Day annually on September 30th. This day honors the Indigenous children sent to residential and boarding schools, raising awareness of this painful history and its lasting impacts as we advocate for healing and truth in education.
